At New York Sash, we believe that home maintenance shouldn’t be a chore. That’s why our windows are specifically engineered to make cleaning a simple and quick process. Whether you’re removing a winter’s worth of grime or just want to let more sunlight into your living space, following these professional tips will ensure your windows look and operate like new.
Step 1: Starting with the Screens
Before you touch the glass, you need to clear the way. For our standard windows, the first step is to disengage the locks, open the window, and remove the screen.
Pro Tip for Screen Care: Our screens feature finger latches and are spring-loaded on one side. To remove them, simply engage the springs, push the screen out, and pull it directly into your house through the open window.
We recommend taking your screens outside to a driveway once a year to hose them off. This effectively removes accumulated pollen, dirt, and dust that can block your view and your airflow. Let them air dry while you move on to the glass!
Step 2: Cleaning Windows with Tipping Sashes
One of the biggest advantages of a New York Sash brand window is the tilt-in feature. You can say goodbye to dangerous ladders and expensive professional cleaners.
- Bring the top sash down.
- Disengage the finger release latches.
- Tip the sash directly into the room.
From the comfort and safety of your home, you can now reach every inch of the glass with a quick spritz of Windex or your favorite glass cleaner.
Step 3: Cleaning Casement Windows
Our casement line requires a slightly different—but equally simple—approach:
- Unlock the window and crank the sash open.
- Release the internal screen.
- With the window open, you can easily reach out to wash the outside of the fixed glass and the side of the sash itself.
Step 4: Reassembly & The Finishing Touch
Once your glass is sparkling and your screens are dry, it’s time to put everything back together:
- For Tipping Windows: Simply push the sashes back into their vertical tracks until they click.
- Reinstall Screens: Pass the screen back outside, align the spring-loaded side into the track, and push until the finger latch engages.
- Note: Larger screens can twist slightly; always visually verify that they are fully seated in the outside track.
- Lock Up: Slide the sashes back, pull the screen down into position, and re-lock the window to ensure a weather-tight seal.
